Pairing a new Apple TV remote

My old Apple TV remote was damaged. How do I pair the new remote? Do I need to unpair the original remote first?

For Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier), you will need to unlink the previous remote (this can be done with the new remote). If your Apple TV remote isn’t working - Apple Support

For Apple TV (4th generation or later), a replacement Siri Remote can be paired without unpairing first. And IR remotes, such as the Apple Remote (aluminum), can be used interchangeably without any linking action.
