M1 MacBook Pro USB4/Thunderbolt3 ports became non-functional after upgrade to 11.2.1

Both USB4/Thunderbolt3 ports on my brand new M1 MacBook Pro stopped working. No device connected to any of them is detected by the OS, the machine refuses to draw any power from power adaptor and/or charge the battery. It got to this state immediately after upgrade to 11.2.1. Except for non-functional USB4 ports, the MacBooks works normally.

I've tried:

  • SMC reset (i.e. shutdown, close lid, wait 30 seconds, power back up) - did not help (tried it several times)
  • reinstall 11.2 in recovery mode - reinstall was succesfull (it is now running 11.2), but USB ports still don't work.
  • revive procedure using another MacBook - the MacBook Pro either refuses to enter the DFU mode or (more likely) cannot communicate with the Macbook running Apple Configurator 2 via USB (doh!) because it never shows up in the configurator
  • ran Apple HW diagnostics - got 2 error codes:
      1. There may be an issue with the power adaptor (PPP007)
      2. There may be an issue with the System Management Controller (PFM006)
  • another upgrade to 11.2.1 - system refused to do it, because it wants to be on external power ;-).

I'd bet that SMC (error code PFM006) is the root cause.

Has anybody seen this problem? Is there any solution other than handing the MacBook to Apple support? I have all data backed up via TimeMachine and still have 25% of battery remaining, so I can experiment :)

Hello mach20,

It sounds as though you're having issues with the USB-C ports on your new MacBook Pro M1. Running the diagnostic to determine if there's any errors is a great step to help work towards a resolution.

With the PFM006 error Apple's documentation recommends visiting a location or contact Apple to inquire about service options. For the error PPP007 that's an indication that there is an error with the power adapter which likely can be due to not being connected, or if it is connect related to the USB-C port issue. You can find this information outlined in the following article.

It would be recommend to contact Apple via the Get Support website, or visit a location found via the Find Locations website.

Have a great day!
