Can't connet ipad in Keynote

I try to use iPad as remote controller to control Keynote presentation on Mac.

I follow all the steps in Use Keynote Remote to control your Keynote presentation - Apple Support, and I still can't link my Mac with iPad.

This is what I see, which shows that no device is found, while both Mac and iPad are connected to the same Wi-Fi.

On the other hand I am able to link Mac and iPad using Sidecar.

Please do not tell me to read the above instruction link and follow the steps because I have done it several times.

My iPad is iPad 6, using iPadOS 14.4. My Mac is MacBook Pro 2017 using macOS Big Sur. Keynote on iPad is version 10.3.9.

1 - If you are trying to use a corporate wifi, (university, business, conference centre) you will need specific permission from the system administrator to connect to the network. If using your own network, check the settings of the router are allowing you connection.

2 - A good test to discover if you are actually connected to the network, is to send an image file to your Mac using Airdrop. Does this work?

3 - On the iPad, go to Keynote recents, and tap the play button top right of screen:

tap the Devices button, is the iMac listed?

If not, tap on the Add a Device button as shown below follow the device setup procedure

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your fast reply.

  • I tried your second recommendation, and I can successfully send a photo to Mac from iPad.
  • I tried your third recommendation, and here is what I saw when I tapped the play bottom:

Following the instruction in the above figure, this is what I see on Mac:

And still, no device is shown.

  • As for your first advice, I have tried both the Wi-Fi at home and at school, but neither of them work. I'm not sure whether it is the routers' setting that make my iPad and Mac unable to link in Keynote, since I can use AirDrop to transmit photos.

Thanks again for your reply.

further checks:

1 - before trying to connect remote control, open Keynote on both the Mac and iPad with the presentation open on the Mac

2 - make sure bluetooth is switched on with both Mac and iPad

both on the Mac: Apple Menu > System Preferences > Bluetooth

and iPad: Settings /Bluetooth

3 - ensure both the iPad and the Mac are close enough to the router to receive a strong signal,

(in our office, moving two paces in any direction kills reception)

4 - on the iPad, is there an entry for the router listed in Settings > Wi-Fi:
