i am migrating from google drive to icloud drive but i was wondering when i view on my iphone a file stored on icloud drive is a copy left on the device occupying space? I have many files on the cloud that I use frequently for work and if that were the case, the storage of the iphone would run out soon

maybe I am not able to clearly explain my problem: I work with about 1 terabyte of documents on my cloud ... sooner or later by dint of opening documents and presentations the 128g of my iphone 12 promax will run out if copies are copied locally . Does the iphone have a memory management mode whereby it deletes files locally and recovers them from the cloud when needed so as not to run out of internal space?
I too am confused with the concept. I thought I saw somewhere about optimizing or not optimizing storage somehow. I'm not sure how that relates to how much iCloud Drive data may or may not be on a local device like an iPhone or iPad. Can you help clarify?

iCloud is a syncing service in most ways. If you delete from the device the iCloud copy is also deleted.
so a copy remains on the iphone without the possibility to remove it only from the iphone? there is no function like the one present on macOs: remove the download?
I move the most important from my Mac to external drives.
