Folder says "out of space" when there is plenty available on my hard drive and iCloud

Hi! I have seen several questions, and comments about storage space being full but none I could find specifically addressed this particular issue. I have a folder that says "out of space" but there is plenty of storage available on both my hard drive and in my iCloud storage. I also have an issue in that when I select that particular folder, I don't have the option to upload it to the could, even though I have selected all documents to upload. Can someone please tell me how to make sure my folder is backed up, since I can't seem to figure it out?! Thanks so much in advance, I appreciate your help!

KristynaB76,

We appreciate you answering those questions for us.

To help isolate this issue a little more, we'd like to see if the same issue happens in safe mode. You can find more information about using safe mode here: How to use safe mode on your Mac

If the issue doesn't happen in safe mode, please check out the "If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode" part of the above link.

Thank you!

Hello KristynaB76,

We understand that some folders are showing an "Out of Space" message despite having storage space left, and we want to look into this with you.

"The Out of Space status icon indicates that the folder or file can’t be stored in iCloud because there isn’t enough iCloud storage." More about that here: Get file, folder, and disk information on Mac

Since you appear to quite a bit of iCloud storage available, we want to check into this further. To help do that, we'd like to ask a few questions.

  1. When did you first notice the "Out of Space" message? Were any changes made to your device before that issue began?
  2. Which macOS version is your Mac currently running? Find out which macOS your Mac is using
  3. Do you run into the same behavior after restarting your Mac? Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac

Thanks!

Thank you so very much for your response!

  1. I noticed a few weeks ago, so I immediately upgraded my iCloud storage to try and alleviate the problem. I think the only change that had been made was a system update that happened automatically.
  2. It is now running Big Sur 11.2.1
  3. The behavior persists after sleeping, restarting, and shutting down.

Thanks again, I REALLY appreciate you looking into this for me, I am positively perplexed!

I'm encountering the same issue as KristynaB76.

The issue persists, and locks me out of documents, and renders me unable to save documents to own computer, as it says there is not enough room on iCloud, though my computer has plenty of room. It is locking me out of access to critical documents when I need them, and doesn't allow me to save the files onto my actual hard drive. Please tell me and KrystinaB76 there is an option to turn this off, and return all of the files safely from iCloud to the computer's drive.

Thank you for the suggestions. I followed all the steps, and the problem persists. I'm beginning to think I may have to suck it up and take it in to be looked at. My files are being saved on my computer, it's just not letting me upload the ones I actually really need backed up to the cloud. It's very frustrating and I truly appreciate your efforts to help me. Thanks again.

The Macintosh HD is storing lot of apps ( in your first screen shot ) , what are these apps in finder > applications ( are they other unidentified apps / softwares ) ? if so right click on them and delete .

Regarding the second screen shot you personal folder is quite massive , you have stored many big files / documents iCloud Drive FAQ - Apple Support inside it , delete them Go directly to a specific folder on Mac - Apple Support

Delete files and folders on Mac - Apple Support

Also , for the massive folder - you should not have changed any read and write permissions Change permissions for files, folders or disks on Mac - Apple Support

Check the box of optimise storage , if these massive folders are not created by you and shared by some one else Share folders with iCloud Drive - Apple Support

And they have created a password on it , then ask them Share files with others who use your Mac - Apple Support

Thanks for your response. Other than Microsoft Office, I only have one other app that didn't come standard on my computer, so there is nothing to delete or consolidate there.

I don't have any large files stored on my computer, they are almost all documents I have created, not videos, or music, orange anything that would take up a lot of space. And with 200 gigs of cloud storage, I don't understand why the documents I've created in that particular folder aren't being saved.

No one else has access to my folders, I'm not sharing, or receiving any shared information at all.

Short story long, none of this makes sense to me but I really appreciate you trying to unravel the mystery.

Did you changed any read and write permissions in home folder ? you can sign out Apple ID from Mac system preferences and again sign in with same credentials ( are you using two factor authentication or still using secondary authentication account in which three answers for security questions , date of birth , rescue mail address and its password is added - in that iCloud keychain verification code is required that must be in records previously as it will be used when you again sign in to set up keychain .

The documents sync from iCloud when Mac is connected with power outlet and high network speed .

Try this first , otherwise create a new admin account Set up users, guests and groups on Mac - Apple Support in users and groups , and check these documents sync .
