Can I connect my M1 MacBook Pro with an external monitor using VGA instead of HDMI and if I can, can I get extended (two different, not mirrored) images on the monitor in that way?

VGA is not part of the solution.

System preferences > Displays > Arrangement:

uncheck [√] Mirror displays

.

Mission Control in system preferences and uncheck "Displays have separate spaces."
