iphone se cannot connect to icloud

We got my son an iphone se last week. We transferred his info from his ipod touch to his new iphone se. None of his music transferred which was fine. We could have him use the music from my icloud account. When we went into his settings, and then Apple ID and clicked on name, phone numbers, etc. and his passwords & security, a message popped up saying "cannot connect to icloud". Everything else works on the phone - texts, emails, phone calls, internet. The phone is connected to wifi. This is the only issue we are having. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Joey1520,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities. We can definitely understanding needing to get your Son's device signed into his iCloud account. Based on the picture provided, it looks like the device is connected to a VPN. Try connecting without a VPN to see if you get the same error. The VPN may be preventing the device from connecting to Apple's servers.

Getting that VPN turned off is going to be the best option since that is most likely what is blocking the connection to the iCloud server. If you turn off the VPN, it shouldn't reconnect automatically. You may want to check for any updates for the VPN app or you can try deleting the VPN app completely and then trying to connect to iCloud.

Thank you so much for trying to help us. I really appreciate it! We tried to turn off the VPN but the iPhone automatically would turn it back on every time we tried. When i read up on VPNs I think it’s because they’re trying to protect you from getting hacked. Do you have any other suggestions?
