I no longer have access to my photos in aperture. Unfortunately I upgraded not knowing it was incompatible. I had iCloud back up. Can I download the aperture photos from iCloud to my new computer into iPhoto or external hard drive?
Try open that with Photos, which is installed on your Mac.
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point at your Aperture Library. It will do the rest.

Aperture had no iCloud back up facility. What have you got backed up, where?
Aperture predates iCloud and had no connection with it.
Is there an Aperture Library on your machine? In your Pictures Folder?
I was just using iCloud
It is updating library so I guess that’s a good sign 😅
