Random Notes disappearing from Notes App

For third time in 2 months, the last created Note in Notes app disappears.

I cant express how frustrating this is.

iPad OS 14.4

iOS 14.4

macOS 11.2.1

I spent hours writing down a note in my iPad.

Opened my Mac to check some data.

The note disappeared from the iPad, its not in the trash, nor in the Mac, nor in the iPhone, nor in iCloud.

Theres no sign of it as if has never existed.

Checked In my iPad, iCloud and GMail folders.

Checked manually each note to find out if it was hidden between the rest of my more than 600 notes.

All devices backup settings are ON for the notes App.

First time it happened I forced myself to believe I had done something wrong. Anyway it wasn’t t in the trash. This has happened again. Twice. If I can’t rely on this app it renders it absolutely unusable.

Today's loss is painful. Hours of work and inspiration lost forever. This is not the way, Apple.

I've heard of many others suffering the same painful bug. And the reset the device option doesn't work. Full reset to an old backup won't make the trick either.

APPLE WE NEED HELP, AND THIS BUG SOLVED.

Hello sebasttian,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

We understand from your post that notes are disappearing and cannot be found. When you open the Notes app and view all your Folders do you have other categories, like iCloud, email accounts, and On my iPhone? Have you checked each Folder that is listed to see if the note was saved under a different folder? If you use the search feature, does the note appear? Check the Notes settings and see which account is set to your default account using the steps in this article under the heading, "Change your Notes settings":

Best Regards.

Hi alwayswantingtohelp1!

When I open the Notes app I have other categories, like iCloud, email accounts, and On my iPhone.

I have checked each Folder that is listed and also checked each note, one by one (+600), and there is no sign of the deleted note. It won’t show in the search either.

iCloud is my default account.

This random event happened a couple of times. It also happened to my wife, one month ago. When this same event happened to her, I came to the conclusion that she had somehow deleted it unintentionally.

Now I’m sure there’s a bug deleting the last note. As a couple of times this happened while opening a second device (iPhone or Mac) my guess is that it is related to the sync process.

im not willing to take notes in my iPad till this is solved or figured out. Is the first time in my +15 years of Apple user that I feel I can’t trust my Apple ecosystem with my moments of inspiration.

Hi Sebasttian:

Just chiming in to empathize. I've just entered into the interminable threads around this issue this afternoon after my well-used |Notes app vanished from my phone overnight. The more I see, the more frustrated I'm getting though as nobody seems to ever answer peoples' questions about how the random disappearance can be explained in the first place - other than "user error" (no Apple - I definitely did NOT accidentally delete my Notes app overnight!!!)

My theory is that it may be storage space related but I'm not seeing anyone suggest that's it as yet.

Good luck...following!

I've just visited this page with the intention of making a comment, only to discover the Notes app isn't shown there! Not sure what's up with that but I suspect it's not good. I've just sent a message via their website support portal as follows:

"Why does the Notes app no longer appear here? There are a huge number of accounts now of peoples' notes and the app itself vanishing from a variety of devices with no warning. Never mind anymore lame directions on iCloud or other synching options after-the-fact. We need explanations for why this is happening in the first place. And if you're quietly retiring this app from service, I think it should be a clear and transparent process."
