Logic Pro X tempo error importing midi files 177.935bpm and above

I'm working with a team of musicians on material of various tempos. Obviously 202bpm is extreme but that was the brief I was given. I exported the midi file at 202 to send off and re-imported to check as I do.

Strangely it imported at 201.xxx.

I re exported, same result, tried it with LPX 10.5.1 and 10.4.4 same result.

I have repeated the error all the way down to 177.935bpm. Not that fast really, a moderate 90's drum'n'bass tempo.

The MIDI exported at 177.935bpm comes back in at 177.9349.

Is this a documented bug? I would expect the possible discrepancy if importing a file made in another DAW, but here I'm importing a MIDI file that I just generated.

If my client has a track at 180bpm I need to be able to give them a 180bpm MIDI file, not 179.98.

Logic can do it at 120bpm fine. Is there some limitation I'm unaware off?

I can confirm this bug. I exported a 208 BpM midi file in Logic.

Tempo results by opening the midi file in

Logic 10.5.1> 207.9997 BpM

Sibelius Ultimate 2020.12 > 207.9997 BpM

Ableton Live 10.1.18 > 208.00 BpM

Musescore 3.6.2 > 208 BpM

But the problem could be worse.

As long as your midi file only has one tempo, it's easy to change the tempo.

• Open the midi file in your DAW as a new session, change the tempo and copy the tracks into the song you like

• import the midi file and just change the tempo and continue from there

• import the midi file in a session with a tempo you like and ignore the tempo information.
