ICloud Desktop won't let me access older ppt file

When I bought my Macbook Pro and Mac Desktop in 2012, I bought two licenses for the Microsoft suite. Up until about 6 months I never had any problems. Once I did some recent OS upgrades, my licenses were not longer accessible. About a month ago I upgraded to the new Microsoft 365 and it worked well until today. I went to retrieve a ppt that is about 18-months old. I save things on my desktop because otherwise I have a very difficult time finding files. My desktop is on ICloud so I can access everything on all my apple devices. Now I'm getting an error message that the files cannot be opened because they are ICloud. Any advice? Its critical that I access my older files.

Hello katharine18,

Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

We understand you need to access your documents from iCloud without any issues. We'll be glad to help.

These steps will guide you with how to open your files in iCloud Drive: iCloud Drive FAQ

On your Mac, go to the iCloud website here: iCloud Drive

Can you access the file there?

Try restarting in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, completes a basic check of your startup disk, and clears cache. Open the files while in safe mode. Restart your Mac to exit. Then try opening the files again.

Cheers!
