Erase fail for trade in

I would like to trade in my MacBook Pro and buy a new MacBook Pro.

when I erase my Macintosh HD, the erase process failed due to the disk is still in use. Now it can’t be shutdown or restart.

Can I still trade in this laptop in this condition or do I need to take it to Apple to repair it first?

Many thanks!

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15

You must boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), select Disk Utility and erase from there. One can't erase the drive one is booted into. Then in the same Recovery volume window reinstall the system.
