for some unknown reason time machine does not recognise my external drive which is wd passport for mac drive.
when i click "select back up disk" i get other air port time capsule and that's all , also when i click set up it goes to a "other wi-fi devices" .no configured airport base stations have been found.airport utility will continue searching.
i am running big sur
any help would be greatly appreciated

Your WD Passport is not a Wi-FI connected drive but a USB drive. Trying to connect to it through Wi-Fi will always fail.

Works fine on a WD Drive that is designed to connect to a network using wireless......as long as the WD is formatted correctly to work with Time Machine.
