I am having the same issue. It is too late when I know that Brother DCP-T420W does not support AirPrint and Brother (based on their website) might not provide macOS drivers. This is silly as this printer is only released this year.

Brother expects macOS users to export everything that needs to print to PDF, and then print it using the Brother iPrint&Scan utility app. This is hilariously annoying!

I hope Apple will provide the proper CUPS driver for this printer. Brother seems to be not that great of a printer company. How I just wished that I just kept my money and bought an Epson instead.

I tried using the driver for DCP-T510W and it worked for me.

You can download it here:

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=ph&lang=en&prod=dcpt510w_all&os=10060.

Select the 10.15or older MacOS version. Just double click and install after downloading.

After installing, add your printer in "Printers and Scanner" settings and use the DCP-T510W CUPS driver.

Note: Use this at your own risk. I'm not an expert on this topic and I don't know if there will be complications or not. I just want to share my solution. :)

Apple posted this Brother PrinterDriver bundle back in December, perhaps it includes the drivers for your printer.

https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1927?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Once downloaded double-click to install.

You can always check on Brothers own support site.

https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadlist.aspx?c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=dcpt420w_all&os=10045

Make sure the operating system selector is set for macOS Mojave 10.14

there are several options for you to download and install.

Hi,

Just as a comparison, a DCP-T510W is mentioned in the About AirPrint - Apple Support as a model supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. For macOS Big Sur, the printer manufacturer recommends using AirPrint. However, for macOS 10.15, 10.14, 10.13, 10.12, and 10.11, CUPS drivers (different versions) can be found under Downloads.

https://support.brother.com/g/b/producttop.aspx?c=us_ot&lang=en&prod=dcpt510w_all

An interesting thought is whether the above drivers would work with a DCP-T420W. It may not work at all. Generally speaking, anyone carrying out experiments with drivers must know exactly what to do and what to expect. There can be software conflicts. It may become necessary to erase and reinstall everything on the computer. The wrong printer driver could possibly even cause a hardware problem. Data may be lost. Multiple backup copies of important files should always be available.

Inform Apple of This:

Brother probably has yet to do their part in Big Sur capabilities.  Apple and Brother are two separate companies. So, let Apple know about this incompatibility issue.  Apple won't get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what to include in updates to come.

So, Provide the Feedback:

  1. Go Here: Feedback - macOS - Apple
  2. Select: "Software/Hardware Compatibility" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Select: "Printing" for the "Feedback Area"
  4. Comment On: When you came across this issue, and how you have troubleshot it thus far.
  5. Proceed from there as necessary

Hi,

I couldn't find that "fast print" option anywhere... It seems not to work with my Mac.

I'm using an M1 laptop with the latest macOS Big Sur 11.3.1

However, after a few days being struggled with it, I found another workaround solution... need some extra cost thought but it quite cheap.

I use a "Raspberry Pi" computer to install the printer DCP-T420W then share it on the network. I connect my MacBook to the printer through the raspberry pi to print directly from any application. It works fine on my iPhone and iPad, too. I can also control color or mono print options, paper quality, etc.

I still use the native iPrint&Scan app for scanning though.

The disadvantage points:

  • You need to keep the Raspberry Pi running 24/7 and connect to the network. Since Raspberry Pi is said to consume very little energy, I don't think this would be a problem.
  • It's quite annoying when you unplug the printer from the powersource to move it somewhere else, you need to refresh it on the raspberry pi. It does not need to re-install or anything, just simply go to the raspberry pi and open the printer setting for it to be refreshed automatically. You can install the VNC app to control this from any device where having an internet connection (does not need to be on the same network).

Note: this solution works with any printer any brand that has network printing technology.

You can easily find how to install the raspberry pi on the internet.

And feel free to reach out to me if you have any issue.

Still hope that Brother or Apple would release a proper CUPS driver for this printer as it unacceptable to buy a new model and it does not support Mac completely.

Cheers,

Chris

Where to Go:

Get the drivers directly from Brother. And, for Macs, it looks like Brother has the drivers you may need, as long as you have High Sierra (macOS 10.13) or later installed on your Mac:

Go Here: Downloads | DCP-T420w | Others | Brother

Printer manufacturers are responsible for making available drivers that are compatible with current OS versions - Apple only makes them then available as a convenience; they do not “develop” drivers for thousands of third party hardware items. You need to check the specs of anything you buy to make sure it does what you need it to do and is compatible with your computer.

I would contact their support to get some answers.

Yes. Wish i had read this thread before I bought this model.

Annoying it is so.

I'm trying to return this to amazon back.

How much money does a multinational like brother needs to make some few lines of code?

It's absurd to expect customer to convert to PDF and then print.

Apple and brother are requested to please release the native driver for this model. Thanks

"I tried that and the application said that i should download 'Brother iPrint&Scan utility app' from appstore and it can only print pictures and PDF. Excel, Word and other third party apps can't directly print from their apps beside from Brother iPrint&Scan utility app. I don't have time for converting word to PDF I'm working at office."

Try a new Admin Acct:

Create a new Administrator User on your Mac (for troubleshooting purposes). See if you can add the printer on that user.

Have you Contacted Brother?

Take this up with Brother, seeing what they have to say.

Hi,

As you have found out, the DCP-T420W is not an AirPrint model, and the Brother download site seems to suggest iPrint&Scan. CUPS drivers on the other hand are offered for the DCP-T510W model (see my previous reply above). Unfortunately, I do not have access to these printers, but dooooooom appears to have tested it (I can only assume, with a DCP-T420W). A CUPS driver should allow you to print directly from other applications.

on my DCP-T220 (without wifi) then i can install directly from Preferences. What you need to do is to find software on that page rather than to let macbook to find it automatically. Find brother software with "CUPS" at the end of the sentence.

Thank you very much for the recommendation.
