I have freed up about 40 GB of space on my MacBook Pro and it seemed that it fixed the issue but the problem came back. I don't usually run a lot of Applications anymore because of this issue. Usually, Google Chrome (Meet, Classroom, Gmail, Drive) and maybe one other application.
Is there a fix. I cannot afford another laptop at this time.

With 8GB of RAM, and Big Sur, you do not have the luxury of running concurrent large applications, or leaving some open in the Dock when not using them. Some of these that you mention may require 8GB RAM for just their usage. Formally quit the applications that you are not using, whether from the Dock icon, or the application's menu.

with some MBPs, RAM upgrades are available. you can have a look at OWC's website to see if your MBP can be upgraded. and OWC's hardware is usually recommended here. they test on macs, so you know their upgrades work as they should.
actually, i just went and looked. almost all MBPs are not upgradable. but according to OWC's page, the late 2013 through late 2016 NON RETINA models CAN be upgraded.
so if they have one of these, they are in luck.
The original poster is running Big Sur on a MacBook Pro. Big Sur runs on these MacBook Pros, https://support.apple.com/kb/sp833?locale=en_US non of which can have their RAM upgraded.
So I cannot upgrade my memory. If I would have known that BigSur would cause an issue I would not have done the upgrade. It is awful how Apple does this. It happened to me years ago when I did an OS upgrade and it basically crippled my laptop and I had to buy a new one. So I guess that this is the same outcome. Awful.
I knew that was low. Can I add more? I hope so? If so what do I buy?
I don't get why this is suddenly happening. I haven't changed my habits using this computer in 10 months. Another way to force a user into a new purchase I guess.
good to know. i knew some were not upgradable, but i didn't know that included all MBPs that are compatible with big sur.
When I looked it up it said MBP before 2012 so I guess that is not the case.
