Duplicate contacts on macbook but "merge duplicates" says there are none.

All of a sudden, almost every contact has a duplicate entry. However, when I run "merge duplicates", it says there are no duplicates. Note that in iCloud and on iPhone there are no duplicates. Just on my mac.

Hello gwenstanley,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with duplicate contacts on you Mac. We are happy to share information that may help.

We'd like to be sure you've tried the steps here: If you see duplicate contacts after setting up iCloud Contacts.

If you manually delete a duplicate contact, does it reappear, or remain deleted?

Take care.

  • I am a sales rep so I'm always (daily) making changes to Contacts either on my phone or on my Mac. This is the first time this duplicate problem has happened. I find it perplexing that when I use the merge duplicate feature, it says there are no duplicates.
  • I updated both my iPhone X and MacBook air today to see if that took care of the duplicates. It did not.

macOS is now Big Sur 11.2.2. iPhone is IOS 14.4

  • I have had an iPhone for several years. Originally, I added contacts on both the mac and my phone depending on which I was using at that moment.

Duplicate contacts on macbook but "merge duplicates" says there are none.
