I have iPhone 8 and X and after the last update ALL contacts from the 8 went on the X - I was deleting those on the X and low and behold they were being deleted on the 8 as well! How can I restore these contacts to my 8? Thank you all.

If you haven't backed up the changes (deleted contacts) and you do have a most recent backup onto iCloud, and you're confident of such a thing, and you believe that backup had all the contacts. Then I will suggest you erase the phone and restore from recent backup.
