Apple watch Band compatibility

My boyfriend has iWatch series 2, 42mm case - stainless steel, link bracelet. As I am willing to buy the new iWatch 6 Series - Silver Stainless Steel Case with Sport Band, I am a bit unsure which size - 40 or 44 mm.

Is the link bracelet from the 2 series, 42mm compatible with the 6 series, 44 mm?
