Using “Apple Account”(Apple gift card)

I have loaded an Apple gift card into “Apple Account. I would like all of my auto subscriptions to pull their charges from this Apple gift card. I have listed the gift card at the top, but payments are still be deducted from my credit card or PayPal. When I click on the Apple account I click on “redeem”. It asks for the code- I enter the code and it tells me this “can’t be reordered”. What? I just want to use this to pay my purchases through my Apple ID in the App Store. What did I do wrong or incorrectly?
