Trying to reinstall software but get an error message. Not familiar with reinstalling MacOS and need help. I have a time capsule to restore from but need the operating system to work of course.

Turn on Macbook and support.apple.com/mac/startup with questions mark flashing..
I restart and with command+R.. connect to wifi and utilities appear
If I choose Reinstall macOS.. it ask select disk where to install macOS.. I choose Macintosh HD 499.96 GB total 494.75GB available
Error message received - An error occurred while preparing the installation. Try running this application again.
Utilities reappear
When I choose Disk Utilities, not sure what to do next.
I've tried erasing everything and everything gives me an error message.
When I go to disk utility to erase, I get an error. I can't reinstall due to an error, something has totally crashed on me.
What exact steps & method are you trying?
