Data loss due to BIG SUR update.

I have lost all my data due to

the Big Sur iOS update. Most of my files had been backed up externally except for my current files/ work. Anyone else have this happen due to BIG SUR? I am left wondering why am I responsible for their ***? And to add insult to injury...paying them to fix it!

Lost how?

You have to give more information. What files and missing, and where did they use to be?

I am thinking that you probably did not lose them.

If you are looking for stuff that used to be on your Desktop and Documents folders, odds are that you, without realizing accepted "Documents and Desktop in iCloud". Click iCloud Drive on a Finder window sidebar. Is your stuff there?

And, by the way, one must ALWAYS do a complete backup before an OS upgrade.

To follow on @ Luis S point - A Rescue Plan, especially if doing both personal and Work is a must. Maybe for future planing purposes, one the machine is operational again.

Do I have a Rescue Plan In-Place. This comprises having a Time Machine Backup and for addition purposes - two Tested Bootable Clones each to separate external drives. This is insurance incase the upgrades goes sideways

That was a problem with an early version of the 11.2.1 update file if you didn't have enough free space on your boot drive. However, it's been replaced with a fixed version and the latest version, 11.2.2 incorporates that fix.

Why do you think you have to pay Apple to fix it? You can do it yourself by boot into the Recovery volume (boot with the Command + R keys held down), erase the drive, reinstall the system and migrate your user data from your last backup before the problem occurred.

I couldn’t get past the Apple logo to log into my computer. I was on the phone with Apple support trying different versions of recovery mode. Nothing would work and we got deep into the recovery side of things. And since my computer is as literally 30 days over the purchase date so all warranties are off the table for repairs. So it came out of pocket.
