All my files on desktop are gone

they are basically there, but when I click on them, they say they can't be found.

I won't and have never used ICloud.

these files were very important to me. What can I do to get them back?

They were there yesterday or a few days ago because I remember opening that folder and replayed the audio files.

Where on a brand new mac can I store my files so they will never be deleted like this?

Some people have had iCloud Drive enabled without them doing it, so check icloud.com...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
