Translating/converting files

I need to convert old Word files to Pages. The advice given in the forum doesn't work. It only lets me save Word docs as Word docs. How do I convert to Pages?

Open the Word document in Pages.

Pages translates the Word file to a Pages document.

Press command-S to open the Save dialogue.

Select a location to save the document to.

Edit the document name, if desired.

Note that the extension to the file name is now ".pages"

Click Save.

Your document is now saved as a Pages file.

The original Word file is unchanged, and still exists in the same location as it was in before.

Edit the document as needed.

Your Mac will auto-save changes in the Pages file at frequent intervals.

The new Pages document will have some differences from the original Word document if any of the features of Word not supported, or supported differently in Pages, will not survive the translation.

When finished, press command-S to ensure the current version is saved.

Close the document.

Quit Pages (if you are finished with it).

Regards,

Barry

PS: If you want a Word version of the edited document:

Before closing the document:

Go to the Edit menu.

Choose Export > Word

choose from the options offfered, then cick Next

(optional): Rename the document

(optional): Change the save location.

Click Export

If you have not changed the name of the document or changed the location to save the new export, it will overwrite (replace) the original Word file. You will probably receive a warning regarding this, and a further opportunity to avoid it or to confirm that this is what you want.

Regards,

Barry
