iphone 12 pro max no sound on phone calls

Sometimes when making or receiving calls there is no sound - it rings but no sound on pickup. Sounds as if both parties on mute, neither can hear any sound at all. Talked to apple support before and went through the whole troubleshooting process, eventually backed up and reinstalled everything from scratch. That seemed to solve the problem but it didn't last. Sometimes have to call 4-5 times to get through, not dependent on reception.

Hello marilize225,

From your post it sounds like you are having an issue with being able to consistently make and receive phone calls. We have a couple things to check that we hope will help.

You mention that you backed up the device and then reinstalled everything. Just to be clear, you did not restore a backup, correct?

If everything worked after erasing the iPhone and setting up as new, do you remember if there was a particular app that was installed right before the issue returned?

What we want to do is try to isolate what might be causing the problem.
