5 year old iPad and suddenly I can't get rid of Bookmarks /reading list on left hand side of the screen

In Landscape screen view, to the left of the Safari address bar you will see a “blue” icon that looks like a book. Tap that and the Bookmark sidebar should go away. You simply “toggle” the sidebar on and off.
