iPod touch detected in Device Manager but iTunes will not see it

iPod touch detected in Device Manager but iTunes will not see it. iTunes and iPod updated. tried several PC reboots and several iPod reboots. tried all steps in iPod help including searching for updated drivers for Portable Devices.
