New iPhone Xs Max

I have received a replacement iPhone XS Max from Asurion because I had cracked the old one, but it is not being recognized by iTunes on my MacBook Pro, thus cannot back it up there. It backs up okay to the cloud. I used phone to phone transfer for the data, however, I don't understand why it won't connect to iTunes. It is actually the second replacement they've sent me, and I have the same problem. Apple support has been unable to help. Can anyone help?
