IMessage

I cannot send an iMessage to most of my contacts, my message is sending as a SMS even though we're both with wifi connection.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 14

SMS messages have nothing to do with a Wi-Fi connection. SMS can be sent over a cellular / mobile network as well. Same thing with iMessages. These can also be sent from a Wi-Fi Network or from a Cellular Network. iMessages are sent via Apple Servers and SMS is a feature and service provided by your carrier.

For iMessages to work between two devices-

  1. Both devices (Sender and Receiver) must be Appel devices (iPhones or iPads etc).
  2. Both devices must have iMessages activated and set to ON.

If the above requirements are not met then the message is sent as a SMS message.
