Restoring a 2011 iMac

I have a 2011 iMac that won't completely start up. the progress bar either gets 80% of the way across and stops or seems to go all the way but still stops. I can boot the unit on Disk Utility but running first aid did nothing for the problem. I'm afraid to just randomly try things and get deeper in the hole! Any suggestions? I'm trying to get the unit up and running and then wipe it clean to pass it along.

That could mean is it only "mostly dead" instead of "pushing up daisies."

Do you have a current backup of the 2011 model? That may be the easier way to recover old data.

As a last resort, will it fully start in Safe Mode?

Use the instruction set for "Intel Processors."
