nvram reset bug

Hi I am trying to revive a 2010 MacBook Air that I replaced the battery on, and there is a problem with reinstalling the OS. I first partitioned the drive so that it is empty. Then I try to connect to the internet but the caps lock or shift is on and I can’t turn it off so I can’t enter the correct password. I tried smc reset and nothing changed. Tried nvram reset and I am getting this buggy screen and it keeps resetting. Any advice? Thank you

Had you tried a restart into macOS recovery, to use Disk Utility; to re-erase

then attempt a new installation? (Could be some hardware has damage?)

• If the installer doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on

your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.

Several details appear with instruction options.

Your version of macOS would be rather older than present; you could

try to 'create a bootable installer' ~ & use a USB drive to help install it.

'High Sierra' likely is last macOS your 2010 may use. I'm not presently sure.

Details are within both links above.

Good luck & happy trails!

Hi everyone thank you for the advice. The caps lock problem has gone away somehow but I am at this screen. Maybe I can try to install El Capitan from a usb drive?

If you try to install using Internet Recovery Mode again, then boot using Command + Option + R. I recommend using a bootable macOS 10.11 USB installer (or 10.13). I've never had any issues installing using a bootable macOS USB installer created using Apple's instructions here:

Since your original post mentioned you erased the SSD I highly recommend erasing the whole physical SSD (select the "Apple SSD...." and not the "Macintosh HD" volume).

If the Caps Lock or Shift key appears to be active and you cannot disable it, then it means the built-in keyboard has a problem of some sort. Most likely the Top Case/Keyboard Assembly will need to be replaced. Whether this would cause the Kernel Panic is unknown. You can disconnect the Keyboard/Trackpad Flex Cable from the Logic Board to see if using just an external USB keyboard and mouse will allow you to reinstall macOS and make the laptop functional. If you still have problems, then it means you likely have other hardware issues as well if you cannot perform a clean install.
