Nope' neither of them supports Target Display Mode.

The Early 2009 20" is too old and the Mac Mini is too new.

From the Apple support website:

Use your iMac as a display with target display mode

With target display mode, you can use your iMac as an external display for another Mac.

Make sure that your iMac is using macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 or earlier. You can't use target display mode with later versions of macOS, or with Boot Camp and Windows.

This information seems to conflict with the previous answer to my question?

Thanks for all your help folks. Yep, that was just wishful thinking that my old 20" iMac would work and I did take the quoted information out of context. Next question: can any of you recommend a high quality display/monitor to pair with a new Mac mini? My one requirement is that the total width of the unit can not exceed 19.5" due to the configuration of my custom computer cabinet. TIA for any suggestions you can provide.
