Apple Watch series 6 water damage

Hi just wondering, I have an Apple Watch that yesterday after coming out the pool has slowly degraded from the touchscreen and display not working properly to it now not being able to turn on at all. Assuming that the watch is water damaged should the service fee for Apple care+ be waived? The watch is supposed to be water resistant there is advertising about using it for Watersport and yet mine broke during just a 10 minute chill out in a swimming pool.
