Trying to unsync photos that have been transferred from ICloud to IPad

I connected an IPhone that has thousands of photos to ICloud.

Quite rightly this has synced those photos to my IPad, via ICloud. Unfortunately, that was a big mistake as my IPad storage is now full!

How can I unsync and remove those photos from my IPad?

Due to the numbers involved, it would not be possible to manually delete.

Hoping for a good solution!!!!

Hi johnthecannibal,

It sounds like you've turned on iCloud Photos n your iPhone, which in turn has started syncing your photos across all devices, but has taken up the storage on your iPad.

If so, you can rectify this without turning off iCloud Photos on your iPad by selecting the option to optimize the storage on the iPad. This keeps the high resolution version of photos in iCloud, but downloads a smaller version to your actual device to save space. Toggle this feature on under Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos. Once there select "Optimize iPad Storage". You can see additional info about iCloud Photos below:

If this does not free up space on your iPad or if you have further questions, feel free to reach back out.

Cheers!

Hey johnthecannibal,

If your iPad has been synced with iCloud Photos, it would mean all your photos are in sync across your devices.

You can delete unwanted photos from any device with iCloud Photos turned on, and it will delete them from all of your corresponding devices. For example, deleting a photo from your iPhone deletes it from your iPad and vice versa.

As iCloud Photos was already turned on, there is not a straightforward option to batch manage photos without risking potential data loss. We'd recommend trimming down your library on your preferred device and they will stay in sync across your devices from that point on.

Cheers!

Nicholas, that is great - many thanks for your reply!

Yes, this does free up a significant amount of space on the IPad.

But, because most of the thousands of photos that were downloaded via ICloud from the IPhone to the IPad were 'rubbish photos', I would actually prefer to remove those photos from the IPad.

The IPad previously contained only 'good' photos, whereas now it has been polluted with a load of rubbish photos which is not what we want!
