Microsoft Office not working with big sur update

After updating to big sur my microsoft office icons all have a white x across them and when I try opening them it says I need to update them. When I go to app store to update them, its shows microsoft 365 all ready purchased. From the app store I can open microsoft word however it says "subscription required to edit and save, start your one month free trial of Microsoft 365 or sign it to activate an existing subscription."

My question is why isn't my old subscription compatible with big sur. I really do not want to spend money on buying another microsoft office package.

Please help!! I need to use the microsoft word, powerpoint, and excel daily. Its frustrating that I cannot open them.

To activate a Microsoft Office 365 subscription you simply enter the email address you used when you extended the subscription with Microsoft.

the App Store apps will require you to subscribe to Microsoft 365; Unless you buy from Microsoft:

Office for Mac running macOS Catalina

If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before WILL NOT run, For Catalina Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later.
