Low on memory message

What causes a low on memory message? I'm on a Mac mini with 8 gigs Ram and the M1 processor, and the message keeps popping up in the middle of my screen when I only have Safari, Finder, Activity Monitor and Music open, but not really doing anything on them. Even if I shut down everything except Finder and Safari, I still get the message.

Out of application memory? Seriously? Now? I get this message after I came back to my mac after several hours away. How is this possible? No changes in the applications I’m running and there are no other ones I use for writing or audio work etc. — I left my mac idle with just the basics, shown in the window, running. WT—? If this is really true, that’s really sad. Never got this before.

That low on memory message is most likely coming from low Disk space and not the RAM.
