Why cant iOS Shortcuts disable Wi-Fi

I’m running the latest iOS 14 and have been trying to author a Shortcut with a geolocation trigger that disables my Wi-Fi when I arrive at the office.

I found this article, below, which outlines the process; however, what I find is I get a push notification, which indicate the trigger has occurred, but my Wi-Fi is not disabled.

I’ve reviewed the Shortcuts app settings, thinking there are permissions I need to grant, with nothing identifiable.

I managed to capture a screenshot while the push notification triggered (and I was authoring this post). I then navigate to the Wi-Fi settings to find it is still enabled.

When this type of event (arriving or leaving) occurs, you receive a notification asking if you wish to run the automation.

My thoughts are, whether for battery saving, or just because I don’t want my phone to default to passing my personal network traffic through work networks (but there are scenarios I still need to connect to work), this would be so useful to have an automation to set it and forget it.

I’ve read Nord VPN also exposes a Shortcuts hook to turn on VPN. (I have ExpressVPN and have requested similar functionality)

Wouldn’t it be nice to automatically turn on your preferred VPN when your phone detected it disconnected from your home WiFi? 😀
