How to know if my SSD is dead?

When I turn on my MacBook, I get the flashing question mark folder and the OS fails to boot up. I’ve replaced the hard drive cable, which hasn’t helped. Disk utility is showing my Sandisk SSD, however it says the storage capacity is only 16kb...when it should be 500gb. Does this mean my drive had failed/is now broken?

What is the exact model of your Mac? You can get this information by entering your serial number here or here.

What version of macOS is being used?

If you want to check the health of the SSD, then I can provide instructions for creating & using a bootable Knoppix USB stick if you don't have an external macOS boot drive.

Do you have a backup of the data?
