i can't sync my messages to my MacBook

I can't sync my messages to my MacBook Air 2020. And my Apple ID keeps showing up when I call or text people, when though I have "start new conversations from" toggles with my phone number. Does anybody know how I can sync my messages? ive restarted my phone and MacBook. ive turned it on and off. ive signed out of FaceTime and iMessage. nothing seems to be working. please help??
