Keys stopped repeating - ???

Out of the blue (it seems), today my Mac's keyboard stopped "repeating" when I hold down a key. Nothing changed (nothing that I consciously did).

Previous behavior on this and every other Mac I've owned/used for the past 30 years has been consistent:

Press a key once, and you get that character (or other effect, eg arrow key moves one position) one time.

Press a key and hold, and you get the same character (or other effect) repeatedly, as long as you hold down the key.

Today, suddenly, that stopped working. Now, you press a key, you get that character once. You press a key and hold it down, and you get...one character. That's it. I've never seen any computer do this before.

I've tried twiddling with the settings in the Keyboard settings, that doesn't fix it.

Running Catalina 10.15.7

iMac Retina 5K, 27", Late 2015

Third-party keyboard

Very strange. Ideas? Thanks.

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Holding down a key for repeat is in fact always supposed to work for symbols and punctuation, including those found on the option and option shift levels.

The default character picker popup menu for letter characters can normally be turned off by opening Terminal app and typing

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool false

and then restarting.

(and turned on again by using "true" in place of "false")

You might want to try turning it off and see if that helps give you more consistent repeating.

Also some antivirus stuff is know to cause problems in this area, especially webroot. It's best to get rid of them if you have any.

Actually....it's stopped working again about an hour after I posted the above. Uggh. :(

This is driving me crazy. It has always worked (it=hold a key down, the key repeats). Until last night. Worked again for a few minutes earlier today, then back to this.

Yes, I can get the key to repeat pretty much all of the non-alphanumeric characters by holding down the key, eg

~~~~~~~~~~~~~````````````````@@@@@@@@@@@@@@$$$$$$$$$$$$$%%%%%%%%%%%%%%##########^^^^^^^^^^^&&&&&&&&&&&&&&**************(((((((((((((())))))))))))))))_____________---------------------------++++++++++++++++==============||||||||||||||||||||||||||\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\}}}}}}}}}}}}}}{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]]""""""""""""""""''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''::::::::::::::::::;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;?????????????///////////////////>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<...............,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But any letter or number.....................................................nope.
OK, I have been testing different use cases, and now I am seeing something strange....
To be clear: the behavior I have always seen in this (and dozens of other Macs) has been: hold down any key, the character repeats. That was the behavior in all apps. This suddenly stopped working last night, and it started working -- briefly -- today, now it's now longer working.
Now, I'm getting the "glyph-picker" popup shown in Tom Gewecke's post above -- but not consistently. It depends on the app I'm using.
In the Finder, in MS Word, in TextEdit, in Safari (which I'm using to type this), when I hold down a key, I'm getting either a single character (in most cases) and I get the glyph-picker popup for a specific set of characters.
In all Adobe apps (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator -- I use them a lot) the behavior is different:
Those characters which would (apparently) pop up the maOS glyph-picker (the following characters: a, c, e, i, l, n, o, s, u, y and z) actually DO repeat when a key is held down. Other characters do not repeat.
So it seems that Adobe does not invoke the same OS-supplied glyph-picker popup (makes sense for many reasons) and just treats the held-down-key differently.
But I am quite sure that before something changed yesterday, the behavior was consistent, in multiple apps, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator (when things briefly started "working" for me today, I was testing in TextEdit, and I would hold the 'x' key down, the x-character repeated as long as I held down the key).
I've done some cursory google searches for this issue and there are a LOT of Mac users reporting similar behaviors. So I'm not sure what to think.
I do have this question, though:
Open up the Keyboard settings on your Mac. Note the presence of the slider labeled "Delay Until Repeat".
If holding down a key is not supposed to work, what is the purpose of this setting?
Given Apple's weird fetish for removing EVERYTHING they possibly can, why would this legacy setting still be allowed to exist?
Default behavior for MacOS for the last 10 years or so has been that most keys do not repeat with press and hold. Instead they generate a popup menu with accented characters, as shown at
https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/enter-characters-with-accent-marks-on-mac-mh27474/11.0/mac/11.0
I assume yours does not do that?
And you have played with the Key Repeat Rate and Delay Until Repeat settings?
Can you try a different keyboard?
Well, this is all crazy....
I rebooted, many times, still acting the same. Adjusting settings in the Keyboard settings does not fix it.
I backed up everything, shut down, let the computer rest overnight. Next morning, I start it up, and now...
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Itttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt
Workssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Againnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
A Daylight Savings Time glitch? Beats me.
Strange, but I'll move on.
