Apple Mail: excessive storage used and no visible emails?

Hi, my mailbox uses 100Gb of storage, and when I open it up I can see at the bottom of the screen is it loading over 7,000 emails, but when it is fully open i cannot see these emails (to delete them or some of them). I used mail for both iCloud and gmail accounts. Am wondering if they are in an archive somewhere I cannot see? I would like to reduce the storage and only keep emails that I want. Thank you. Debbie

So, exactly which model/year Mac and which OS version?

And, just a thought (without having relevant info): if your accounts are IMAP, you need to check the time periods on your provider's website/email account to see how long they keep emails. And you can delete them right there. If they are IMAP, emails are kept indefinitely in that Inbox (or a specified amount of time) and will be downloaded to your Mac every time you open the Mail app.

What Mac OS version? Mail questions are best posted in the forum section for your OS version.

Although Apple did not make sit obvious, this section is for reporting issues with using the forum software, but get used as a dumping ground by some users (not you). Therefore not as many helpers are here. If you post your OS version, we can ask the Mods to move you to a more active forum.

The Mac is MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), Mojave 10.14.6. I am not sure what Gmail use (re query about IMAP) as not great on my understanding of the different mail servers and how they work. Apple have a really helpful way to set up new accounts by selecting the account provider for a drop down so we don't get to see the nuts and bolts. Thank you Debbie
