Internal Mic not working on M1 MacBook Air

Man! you are a life saver. I have been in this hassle for two months and neither Apple nor authorized maintenance could figure out the problem. I had to erase everything and reinstall BigSur again. Nothing changed! I was so desperate after authorized tech told me I might need to send it back to Apple. My MacBook Air is only 3 mo old!!! I came across your question. I literally translated your solution and WOW!!!. That was it! the case was the problem yes!. I have the case with magnetic seal from the side and yes I was putting my Mac on it all the time to prevent scratches. it has been two weeks since I knew that and the mic has been working fine and normally. it did not fail once since then.

Technical reason beyond me. It is more of observation from many others with similar issue and solution. On the Intel MBA - that I know bu M1 is too have definitive answer. For Intel p the SMC ( System Management Controller ) controls builtin functions like the Mic. As for your M1 MBA - believe this action you performed has resolve the issue and hopefully permanently.

Is the Mic not working in Software Other than in FaceTime or in some Third Party Application like Zoom etc.

If not working in FaceTime - suggest having the computer looked at by Apple Authorized Service Centre. Or - if under the 14 day Return Policy - return to Apple.

If in Third Party Application - trouble shoot from the Developers Web Site

Might be able to ask for Exchange if you have Apple Care Plus.

Sorry the issue has returned. If I were you - I am not - would take it back and reproduce the Issue to them. Have them attempt to reproduce the same thing. If they can - they may replace the computer. But, be sure they are the ones to reproduce what you have already shown them. Now, the responsibility is on them to fix or replace / exchange.

Shutdown and connect to charger. Hold Power Button / Touch ID Button ( same function ) for 10 seconds and perform this action 3 times in a row. Restart on Normal Mode and test the Mic.
