MacMini iPhone sync stuck on step 5 of 5

Sync of my iPhone X over a USB cable to my MacMini has been stick on "Syncing Photos (Step 5 of 5) - Waiting for Items to copy" for 2 hours now. The progress bar is useless as it's just displaying a moving diagonally striped bar, so I have not idea how much longer it might take.

Does anyone have a solution? Should I just unplug the iPhone?

I don't believe it is a cable issue because I can transfer e.g., photos *from* the iPhone to the Photos app with no issue - there is some other issue syncing back. I have tried on WiFi. I have restarted the iPhone. I have tried adjusting/reducing what is in scope for sync (at this point it is just Music and Photos). I have tried creating the backup manually which succeeds. Then the number of steps reduces from 6 to 5, but it's still the same issue. At this point it seems like there is some wider issue blocking it. What else can I try? Thanks!

Waiting for Changes to be Applied When I plug in my iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 15.1) into my iMac (macOS 11.6.1 Big Sur), my iPhone starts to sync in a Finder window. I have 43k photos and I want to copy them to my iPhone. Unfortunately, my sync never finishes. It gets to Step 5 of 5 and displays "Waiting for changes to be applied" and never gets any further. How do I get my iPhone to finish syncing?

Cannot sync iPhones with Mac since latest Catalina and iOS updates We have a Mac running the latest Catalina (10.15.4), an iPhone 8 running iOS 13.4 and an iPhone 6 running iOS 12.4.6. We connect the iPhones to the Mac via USB cable to sync photos and videos, in both directions. We choose not to use iCloud for this purpose as we consider it insecure, not so much because of possible hacking as from the threat posed by little fingers, as our grandchildren often play with our iPhones. Since the latest Catalina and iOS updates, it has become impossible to do this sync. As soon as we connect either iPhone, it starts repeatedly beeping. If we have the corresponding Mac Finder window open, then it starts flashing and displaying warning messages (see the pasted image below). If we have the Mac Photos app open, then it keeps flickering between the Photos pseudo-folder and the Device pseudo-folder. We have not discovered any way out of this loop. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to solve it? Thanks

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you've had problems trying to sync your photos from your iPhone to your Mac. Depending on certain file sizes, video sizes, etc., it may take some time to sync all your photos over. We do have some tips to help with this issue.

Look through the steps here, which include helpful tips to successfully sync your photos to your Mac:

Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all of your devices

Scroll down to the section specifically titled 'Stop syncing all photos'.
