Waiting for Changes to be Applied

When I plug in my iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 15.1) into my iMac (macOS 11.6.1 Big Sur), my iPhone starts to sync in a Finder window. I have 43k photos and I want to copy them to my iPhone.

Unfortunately, my sync never finishes. It gets to Step 5 of 5 and displays "Waiting for changes to be applied" and never gets any further.

How do I get my iPhone to finish syncing?

Well, I tried a new tack. I'm syncing Photos on my iPhone to iCloud; Photos on my iMac are already synced to iCloud

Counts

  • iCloud: 43,074 photos, 106 videos
  • iMac: 43,027 photos, 106 videos
  • iPhone: 43,074 photos, 106 videos

So, why is iMac photo count different from the other two?

Well, I restarted my iPhone, fiddled a bit here and there and suddenly, it started syncing, counting down the number of photos remaining from 14K. I left it alone and eventually, it finished.

But, Photos on my iMac says it has 43,027 photos and 106 videos

Whereas, Photos on my iPhone says it has 43,432 and only 1 video.

So, close but no cigar.

I'm trying another sync to see if I can get the counts to converge .... done!

And the answer is, no change whatsoever in the counts. 😩

Why aren't these counts the same?
