Find me feature for Airpods not functioning correctly

Does airpods “find me” sound feature only works when the lid is open?

I have already had two instances where I cannot find my airpods, even though they are fully charged and in the same network at home.. I tested it today, and only when I open the airpods case lid then I get a repeating sound alert from the airpods.

Is this the only way this work?

The Find My feature will not work if the AirPods are in their charging case. Regardless if the case is open or closed.

Other reasons that this feature may not work are:

  • Find My was not enabled on the iPhone.
  • The AirPods are not within range of your devices (iOS or macOS).
  • They are no longer charged.
  • The AirPods have been reset.

This is interesting since I never leave my airpods laying around out of the case. This might then be a “bit of a troublesome” issue.. knowing I cannot find them being inside the case. I will have to make sure I know where I leave them in the future (inside the case). I thought the find me feature was the same as the apple watch/iphone loud enough sound to be able to pinpoint physical location.

Thank you for your help. :)

They are similar, but not exactly the same for each of the Apple devices that support it.

FWIW, I just ran a little experiment with my AirPods 2 devices. I used iCloud, via my Mac mini, to attempt to both locate and play a sound on them. As I expected, they only appeared in the iCloud Find My app, when they were outside of their charging case. However, they didn't immediately disappear when I placed them back into their case (with the lid open or closed.) What I did find interesting is that they only played a sound when the following two things were true: 1) They were outside of their case, and 2) When both Bluetooth was enabled on my mini and the AirPods were connected to it. Regardless, there doesn't seem to be a clear "rhyme nor reason" on when they appear ... so, I too, am a bit concerned on the usefulness of this feature.
