Student showing as binoculars on apple classroom

What is a student doing on their end to block a teacher from seeing their screens? When I have teachers viewing screens, one or 2 students (usually the troublemakers!) have a grey screen with binoculars on it so the teacher can't see what they're doing.

iPad, iPadOS 14

Hello there leannefromhighland,

We understand you're seeing some issues while trying to screen share on certain student's computers. To get started, do these computers have remote management enabled with control through the school, or are they just owned and controlled by the students/parents?

The reason we ask is unless they are secured with Remote Management, there would not be any way for you to remotely force them to enable certain settings, so you may need to reach out to the parents directly for additional help. Otherwise, you'd want to ensure they haven't disabled any access to screen sharing as shown here: Turn Mac screen sharing on or off

Next, if you have remote management enabled on their computers, then you or your IT Administrator may need to review their settings or check for any third-party apps or software that could restrict or filter what you may see during screen sharing.

We hope this helps!

Take care.

Hello leannefromhighland,

What program or application are you using to manage the devices? The reason we ask is different methods may have different options or configurations available. If it's managed using Apple's built-in MDM features, then you may need to contact Apple's Enterprise support for additional help: MDM overview for Apple devices

If your school is using a different app or third-party for managing your school's devices, then you may need to contact them directly since settings and options will differ between vendors.

Take care!

We do manage the iPads. When we remove the student and re-add them then they are seen. So, it's something they do on their end and we adults aren't smart enough to figure out what they're doing! Sometimes we see those binoculars. Sometimes we've seen a 9 dot grid. I think my teachers have even seen a lock on some grey screens. They're on our wifi, bluetooth is on, and air plane mode is off.
