iTunes to Music export/import resulted in empty playlists

I exported .xml library from old Mac iTunes and imported into Music on new Mac.

Playlists all showed up, but they are all empty.

In fact, a few I opened to check were actually emptying themselves of tracks.

Others have a few tracks in them, but are completely wrong.

How can I get my playlists back in full and in tact?

Mac mini, macOS 10.12

Metadata changes should be written to both the tag of a file should it have one (.wav files don't) and to the Music Library.musiclibrary database. I've seen a number of reports where changes to the library have reverted next time Music is run. Are you using AirPlay to listen to your music on HomePod or other speakers. This can cause metadata not to be saved (see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Mac - Apple Community) and I do wonder if it might also be a factor in this issue. Third party AV might also be a cause of problems. Try holding down Option+Cmd as you launch Music to open it in safe mode and see it changes will stick this time.

I appreciate pointing me in the right direction, but this import has been a nightmare and I have hours of work ahead of me. Songs were imported into different playlists, the same songs were imported into different playlists, info in the songs were sometimes different, I have a copies of "downloaded" music clogging up the library - reappearing each time I launch the app, podcasts that do not live on my computer anymore reappearing each time I launch the app. The list goes on...

I appreciate you've had issues with the transfer. Experience tells me that if you still have a working library on your previous computer you may be better off starting over than trying to fix what you now have. For example it isn't usually necessary to import an XML file unless you've edited to fix paths that are different between the two systems. Ideally you need to start with the iTunes library in a portable configuration on your external drive, then option-start-Music on the new Mac to open and convert the iTunes Library.itl file and create a new Music library from it.

What I'm finding is iTunes wasn't saving any changes I made to song names/artists/albums, etc...

Those are the ones that reverted back to their original info and vanished from playlists.

For instance, I don't need song name that says "Blue Monday (New Order cover)"

I delete the (New Order cover) part.

Do these type of changes reside in the .itl file or the library .xml file?

I notice that both these files brought over from itunes on my old Mac have stayed the same, so I will assume new Apple Music has no use for them:

iTunes Library.itl

iTunes Music Library.xml
