I have my iTunes 12.8.2 music stored on an external drive (non cloud files for production and DJing), and when I try to open now in OSX 10.11.6 on newer laptop with Music 1.3.5.8 it doesn't recognize recent playlists and changes. Any ideas how to fix? I take it that Music organizes the files in a different manner?

See Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community. Have you put your .musiclibrary database on your external drive too? If you're making changes back in iTunes 12.8.2 then you would need to convert the iTunes library to a Music library each time you make changes, or invest in iTunes Match or Apple Music.

I've kept music on an external drive for years, with iTunes metadata on disk so I could open on my work computer or laptop for DJing or traveling, but it seems the file structure has changed again, so I'm having issues when I try to load into current version of iTunes.
Thanks for that! Can you describe what version of OS the library was created on vs. the version of OS your work/newer computer has?
And how are you trying to load the music onto this more current version of iTunes as you said? Are you tying to transfer the data to this newer Mac? Of just trying to open the Library that’s currently on your external drive from this newer Mac?
And can you say how these existing songs or playlists aren’t updating in this library or on this new Mac?

Apple Music and Match doesn't work on older machines and also they make it difficult for music producers who want to play their own tracks on other machines. When DJing having access to files locally is important, as I often don't have WIFI access. I suppose its finally time to abandon the Apple software as the work flow has become much less versatile.
