Iphone 12 pro max overheats while wireless charging

My brand new iphone 12 pro max overheats while charging. I have searched these forums and seen that some people say it is normal. Well mine gets hot enough that a warning pops up on the screen telling me the phone must be cooled down before it can be used. I would say that is definitely NOT normal.

is my iphone broken and should it be sent in for replacement?

Hi Pmrussell892,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with your iPhone 12 overheating when charging. We'd like to help.

How are you charging your device? Do you charge it regularly in more than one location? If you do, do you see the notification in each location? Do you have a case on your iPhone? If you remove that, do you still get that temperature warning? While charging can cause your device to be warmer than expected, knowing exactly when and where you see this alert can be helpful in Keeping iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch within acceptable operating temperatures

Let us know and we'll see how we can best help going forward.

Take care!
