How do I stop iTunes automatically adding a music file when I play it on my MBP?

Hi all,

This is a problem that has been annoying me for a year. I've searched for an answer on here but can't find the exact one. I have a lot of mp3 files on my computer that I do NOT want in my iTunes. These files are kept in my documents folder. If I play one however, or drag to my desktop and play, or say download an mp3 from the internet and play, they automatically are added to my iTunes. I then have to go through deleting to keep my iTunes library clean. I was told a while ago to consolidate my library when changing Macs...is this why I have this problem? If so how do I get around it? I feel like I've tried everything. I'm using Mojave and don't want to upgrade. Also don't want to move over to Apple Music.

Cheers!

iTunes cannot play a file that isn't part of the library.

If you use Finder to double-click a song and it is set to open songs in iTunes, iTunes will open, the track will be added to the library, and it will play.

If you don't want that behaviour use something else to listen to the songs. VLC and Plex are two alternatives that come to mind. See https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/best-free-music-players-for-macos/ for some more.
