Mailto link in Google Chrome does not open default email client

Hi All,

I just recently noticed that the mailto links does not open the default email client in Google Chrome on iOS.

Instead it shows the option to send with Mail or Gmail.

My default email client is Outlook. I do not have Gmail installed.

Greetings ninja_ninja,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! It seems Google Chrome doesn't open the default mail app as expected.

Check out how to set the default mail app in the article below, and reach out to the app developer for further assistance if the issue persists:

Change the default web browser or email app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

"How to change your default email app

  1. Go to Settings and scroll until you find the third-party app.
  2. Tap the app, then tap Default Mail App.
  3. Select an email app to set it as the default. A checkmark should appear next to the email app to confirm it's the default.

If you want iOS Mail as your default email app, but you previously deleted it, you need to restore it. Go to the App Store and search for Mail. Then tap the Restore button . Wait for the app to restore, then open it from your Home Screen. Follow the steps above to set iOS Mail as your default email app.

If you don't see the option to set a third-party email app as the default, the developer might not support it. Contact the app developer to learn more."

Kind regards.

Well the default mail client is set to Outlook as I mentioned. The problem is Google Chrome on iOS does not use the system default settings. They just suggest using Gmail or Mail. Gmail is not even installed.

I think it is a problem they do not follow standared protocols. I did write them already, but they just answered Safari on iOS does the same. That is not true though. Safari opens the default mail client.
